Gift Fair Enables Donations to Haitian Relief Efforts

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.-The New York International Gift Fair has established systems that allow participants in the fair to make individual donations to support relief for the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

Individuals may contribute to the relief efforts through the Gift Fair's Handmade division at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from Saturday, Jan. 30 through Wednesday, Feb. 3. The fair has also made direct donations to Artisan Grant Initiative of Vital Edge Aid, a humanitarian organization that supports indigenous artisan communities in Haiti; and AmeriCares, a non-profit disaster-relief and aid organization that provides response to emergency medical needs.

In addition, GLM, owner and manager of the Gift Fair, is cooperating with Aid to Artisans, an international non-profit organization that promotes economic development in the craft sector, to identify companies selling Haitian products. It has also coordinated a list of exhibitors that are donating portions of onsite proceeds to relief efforts, charitable organizations and directly to Haitian artisans.

Many expected 2016 would be a banner year, but the political and economic climate softened consumer confidence. It was also a year consumers spent more lavishly on home remodeling rather than decorating.
