WASHINGTON--The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers has formed partnerships with CSA Standards and UL Environment to jointly develop voluntary sustainability standards for home appliances.

An AHAM statement said the effort is intended to provide a measurement tool to help the public in evaluating the sustainability of home appliances. Noting that energy consumption is a key factor in evaluating sustainability, Joe McGuire, AHAM's president, added, "We will build on our expertise in the energy area, but will also employ a life-cycle approach to identify and measure other significant environmental aspects of appliances." McGuire also said CSA and UL, as standards organizations, "have the credibility and expertise for this initiative."
