Chen, Pina Win IHA Student Design Competition

ROSEMONT, Ill.-Students Samuel Chen of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Mariel Pina of the University of Houston have taken first-place honors in the 19th annual Student Design Competition sponsored by the International Housewares Association.

Chen won for his design of the Cyclone Kitchen Fire Extinguisher, a first-response product that helps put out kitchen fires using a homemade solution of vinegar and baking soda. Pina's winning design is the Ambos-A Greater Colander, which merges the function of a colander and a kitchen grater into one ergonomic and safe product.

Chen and Pina each received $2,500 for their winning designs. The competition challenges students to redesign a current housewares product to meet the needs of the future or to create a concept for a new product.
