Cold-Food Appliances a Hot Market, Says NPD

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-Sales of small appliances used to create cold foods and beverages jumped 41 percent in the 12 months ending this past May, according to research from The NPD Group.
Among the most notable categories, dollar sales of blender/mixer/chopper systems grew 93 percent in that time frame. Sales of ice shavers/snow-cone makers and ice cream/yogurt makers both increased 42 percent on a dollar basis, according to NPD.
The research firm added that unplanned purchases of these categories accounted for about one fourth of all sales in that time period. "Consumers shopping on a hot day will find products that can help them beat the heat very appealing, whether those items were the reason for their shopping visit or not," said Debra Mednick, NPD's executive director and home industry analyst.
The most impulsive cold-treat category, according to NPD's research, is ice shavers/snow-cone makers, with unplanned purchases representing more than half the total sales in that 12-month time frame. One-third of the purchases of ice cream/yogurt makers were unplanned as well, the research found.
