Cookware, Dinnerware Top Gift Spends in Housewares, NPD Says

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-Cookware and dinnerware account for most of consumers' spending for gifts, according to a study by The NPD Group.

Tallying the gift dollars consumers spent between September 2010 and September 2011, NPD found that cookware represented 37 percent of the total gift spending in housewares, followed by dinnerware at 19 percent. In addition, 24 percent of the cookware items sold were frying pans and skillets, making them the top sellers in this category, followed by sets of pots/pans/skillets, which accounted for 22 percent of cookware gift sales.

In bakeware, the number one category was cookie/baking sheets, representing 23 percent of unit sales. Finishing behind this group were bakeware sets, accounting for 15 percent of sales.

NPD also said more than 5 percent of cutlery gift dollar sales came from the direct/mail-order channel.
