NPD: Home Beverage Appliances Show Strong Sales Growth

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-Home beverage appliances have emerged as a particularly powerful product category in recent research conducted by The NPD Group.

According to the research firm, sales for this segment topped $2.6 billion in the 12 months ending in March 2013. Looking at specific beverage-maker categories, sales of home soda machines in that time frame jumped 147 percent. NPD noted that the average selling price for home soda makers rose slightly in that time.

"Consumers love the convenience of making their own soda, with the added benefit of environmental waste reduction," said Debra Mednick, NPD executive director and  home industry analyst. "In addition to the brisk sales of the machines, sales of the accessories and flavorings are increasing exponentially."

Regarding other categories, citrus juicers' sales were up 55 percent. Sales of juice extractors increased 46 percent, sales of countertop blenders gained 33 percent and sales of espresso makers rose 24 percent. Sales of single-serve brewing systems (which, at $900 million in that 12-month period, represented the largest category) were up 7 percent in that 12-month period, while sales of tea makers edged up 3 percent.

NPD's research also showed that online played a major role in these sales numbers. Web sales accounted for nearly a third of sales of juice extractors and 15 percent of blender sales. Online sales of single-serve brewing systems were up 40 percent and brought in 17 percent of the total sales dollars in that category.

"Today's beverage-related appliances offer consumers innovative, fun and convenient ways to brew, bubble and blend just about any drink they crave," Mednick said, "and the web makes it easy for them to tap into all of the options available."
