BENTON HARBOR, Mich.-Appliance giant Whirlpool, parent company of the KitchenAid housewares and appliances brand, is celebrating its 100th anniversary in business today with a number of local events.

Company employees throughout the world are being recognized with activities "that reflect the company's tradition and core values," according to a Whirlpool statement. Jeff Fettig, chairman and CEO, said from its beginnings, Whirlpool has been "dedicated to improving the lives of our consumers, and it is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago."

Whirlpool's origins date to 1911 with the founding of The Upton Machine Co., which produced electric motor-driven wringer washers. Upton merged with Nineteen Hundred Washer Co. in 1929 as The Nineteen Hundred Corp. The company launched the Whirlpool branded automatic washing machine in 1948, and two years later the company was renamed Whirlpool Corp.
