Simmons Teams With Foam Suppliers to Promote CertiPUR-US Certification

ATLANTA-Simmons has partnered with its suppliers of polyurethane foam to highlight the achievement of CertiPUR-US certification for the foams used in the company's mattresses.

According to a Simmons statement, this certification verifies that the foams are free of volatile organic compounds and chlorofluorocarbons, and are made without fire retardants that use polybrominated diphenyl ethers, lead, mercury, formaldehyde, prohibited phthalates and other potentially harmful materials. Simmons said it "played an instrumental role" in helping its foam suppliers to achieve CertiPUR-US certification as a way of addressing consumers' worries about the safety of polyurethane foams. The company also cited a recent survey that found that nearly two-thirds of consumers are "very" or "extremely" concerned about the health and safety of the products they buy, and that a large number of consumers are worried specifically about their mattresses.

To achieve this certification, foams are sent to an independent, third-party laboratory and examined to see they meet environmental, health and safety standards set by the U.S. Voluntary Physical Performance and Environmental Certification Guidelines for Flexible Polyurethane Foams for Use in Furniture and Bedding Items. These standards were developed by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam, a foam-industry trade organization.
