ATLANTA-The Atlanta Area Rug Market kicked off yesterday and manufacturers are using the market to debut new constructions, new price points and plenty of color.
Mohawk Home brought new brands--and new looks for the company--to the show. It marked the official debut of its Bob Timberlake licensed line, which includes wool, nylon and SmartStrand rugs, as well as a new construction for Mohawk: braided rugs. These come in three fibers: wool, a blend and, for the indoor/outdoor braids, synthetic.
Mohawk also debuted a brand to target both new consumers and retailers. Called String Theory, the line launched with three viscose collections that will retail between $199-1,000 for a 5-by-8. The company also debuted its first line of area rugs in its New York Botanical Garden collection.
Karastan made the investment to load 44 additional colors into its creel. "It's opened up a new world," said Brandon Culpepper, vice president, specialty sales, who called it "a step change" for Karastan. It showed six new Axminster rug designs, with 20 more coming over the next 90 days.
Safavieh debuted Dip Dye, a collection that has a tie-dyed look either in the background of the design or in the pattern itself. Designs include geometrics, florals, chevrons and other patterns. It also showed its first collection of shags targeting kids.
Harounian Rugs Intl.'s introductions include Logan, a handknotted group that complements its Aria line. Featuring over-scaled florals, "it's very much a designer look," said Greg Jordt, executive vice president, sales and marketing. Canterbury is the company's first promotional handknotted collection, with a 5-by-8 retailing for $799. The designs are traditional in updated palettes.
Ghazni is a new polypropylene line from Momeni that "looks like a one-of-a-kind," said Ashley Alford, design manager. "The colors are spot on. We're trying to bring in more traditional looks, as Momeni is known for its modern looks." Ghazni is made in Turkey. Another new collection is Havana, a polyester tip sheared line that features organic designs and is inspired by Indian textures with nature themes.
Nourison debuted the Soho collection, a power loomed polypropylene line that is handcarved and has modern designs, as well as Aristo, a more transitional group with an earthy color palette. In its Calvin Klein brand, Mesa is a new line that was added in response to customer requests for a Tibetan weave.
Central Oriental showed Magna, a 3-D shag group from China that will retail for $199 for 5-by-8. "It's a lot of value for the money," said Jim Thompson, vice president, sales and marketing. The company also debuted Terrace, its first indoor/outdoor rug made in its U.S. factory. Made of polypropylene, a 5-by-8 will retail for $199. - Andrea Lillo
