E-Cha-Ching! Cyber Monday Produces Major Online Sales Gains

Xmas Shopping OnlineNEW YORK-A number of surveys and reports have shown that e-commerce sales on Cyber Monday, Dec. 2, increased significantly over last year's Cyber Monday.

According to research firm comScore, e-commerce sales through desktop computers totaled $1.735 billion, up 18 percent over Cyber Monday 2012 and marking the heaviest U.S. online spending day in history. Research by IBM found that total online spending on Cyber Monday (including purchases made through mobile devices) climbed 20.6 percent. Also, data from Visa show that Cyber Monday spending on U.S. Visa cards through desktops, smart phones and tablet computers rose 28 percent to $2.6 billion.

A statement from Walmart said the mass merchant posted its biggest online sales day in history on Cyber Monday. The retailer did not issue an actual sales figure, but said walmart.com processed more than 1 billion page views over the five-day period from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. In a statement issued the day before Cyber Monday, Dec. 1, the National Retail Federation said it expected more than 131 million consumers to shop online on Cyber Monday.

ComScore's data on desktop-computer e-shopping show that the five-day, Thanksgiving-through-Cyber Monday period produced strong gains in online shopping overall. E-commerce sales on Thanksgiving were up 21 percent, while online sales on Black Friday rose 15 percent. For the weekend (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), sales rose 34 percent.

Visa said online sales using its cards gained 30 percent on Thanksgiving. E-commerce sales on Visa cards exceeded $1 billion on four out of the five shopping days from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday.
