BENTONVILLE, Ark.-Walmart's board of directors has nominated Google executive Marissa Mayer as a new board member.

Mayer, who is vice president of local and maps for the search-engine giant, would be the board's 16th member if elected at the company's shareholders meeting on June 1. At Google, she leads product-management and engineering efforts for its local, mobile and local-based products.

Rob Walton, Walmart's chairman, said Mayer's expertise in technology and consumer areas would be "valuable assets" to Walmart. The retailer is "focused on giving our millions of customers around the global 'anytime, anywhere' access whether it is through a mobile device, online or in a physical store," Walton said.
