Hodges Tabbed to Lead Home Merchandising for J.C. Penney

PLANO, Texas-Jan Hodges has been named senior vice president and general merchandise manager for home at J.C. Penney.

The appointment goes into effect on Nov. 1. Hodges succeeds Paul Rutenis, who left the retailer in July.

Hodges will be responsible for the merchandising of the retailer's entire home department. She will report to Liz Sweney, chief merchant.

Hodges joined J.C. Penney in 1988, and has progressed through several merchandising posts involving juniors, women's dresses, suits, outerwear, women's accessories and intimates. Most recently, she was senior vice president of marketing and oversaw the company's sales and promotional strategy.

In a conference call to financial analysts after J.C. Penney released its second-quarter financial results in August, CEO Myron Ullman identified the home department as a particularly troubled department for the retailer. "Our underperformance in this area has been a major obstacle in the turnaround effort so we are making substantial changes to improve performance," Ullman said. He added that the new merchandising strategy involving shop concepts in the department "was not resonating well with our core customer."
