Missoni Heads Home to Southampton

By Allison Zisko

Tucked in among the other upscale shops and businesses on Jobs Lane in Southampton, N.Y., is a new MissoniHome store, the first in North America.

The store celebrated its grand opening over the Memorial Day weekend, just in time for the famed summer crowds that make their way to this tony Long Island town. The 600-square-foot store, which offers furniture, poufs, bed linens, throws, pillows, towels, rugs, and other indoor/outdoor home furnishings, caters to those summer crowds, as well as to the year-round residents, architects and interior designers drawn to the company's fun and fashion-forward designs.

Southampton's location at the beginning of the Hamptons is ideal for those headed farther East who want to either shop or source product, said Chris Philips, vice president of sales for MissoniHome Americas. The store, currently highlighting summer brights, "catches the mood of the people here," who typically come to Southampton for fun and relaxation, he said.

The store is owned by Roxane Mosleh and her husband Bobby Ginsberg, Southampton residents who originally contemplated opening a multi-brand store but then opted to sell only Missoni. "[Missoni and MissoniHome founder] Rosita Missoni's designs for MissoniHome are absolutely captivating," Mosleh said. "Together with Bobby, our goal was to introduce the iconic style of MissoniHome to the quickly evolving coastal town of the Hamptons."

Missoni wanted to be part of that evolution, Philips said. "It made sense to do a small jewel box type of collection," he said during a press event at the store in May. "We didn't want to do anything too big. This way we can showcase parts of the collection." An outdoor garden serves as a showcase for outdoor furniture.

The only missing element in the collection is tabletop, a Missoni category that is currently "in limbo," Philips said, because its license partner, Richard Ginori, was recently acquired and the fate of the license agreements at press time was unknown.

MissoniHome also has stores in Helsinki, Milan, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Oslo, Sao Paulo and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. MissoniHome operates both retail stores and showrooms for the trade, said Carlo Torrani, Rosita Missoni's nephew and an owner of T&J Vestor, which owns Missoni and MissoniHome. The Southampton store is a hybrid, he said, serving both end consumers and the trade, and its offerings are broad. "There are several items in the lifestyle concept," he said, "which mixes fashion, home, design and gifts. That is why every Missoni space we have has an [area] dedicated to home."

The Southampton assortment includes both time-honored Missoni designs, such as its iconic zigzag pattern, as well as new looks for 2013, including many bright floral motifs and classic Greek keys and chevrons expressed through lace effects, textural ecru versions and prints on delicate satin. Outdoor pieces feature patterned Trevira polyester, a high tech, high performance, waterproof, washable and  fireproof fabric.
