Pantone's Color of the Year: Tangerine Tango

CARLSTADT, N.J.-Pantone has designated tangerine tango, Pantone 17-1463, as its color of the year for 2012.

A company statement described tangerine tango as "a spirited reddish orange." Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said the color is "reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset," and that it "marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy."

The color of the year for 2011 was honeysuckle, which "encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor," Pantone said.

Pantone has also formed an alliance with Sephora, the beauty specialty retailer, to create Sephora + Pantone Universe, which delivers color forecasting, trends and seasonal product collections which will include eye shadow, lipstick, lip gloss, nail polish and accessories, and which will be available beginning next March.

Many expected 2016 would be a banner year, but the political and economic climate softened consumer confidence. It was also a year consumers spent more lavishly on home remodeling rather than decorating.
