Retailers, Manufacturers Donate to Tornado Relief Efforts

JOPLIN, Mo.-In the wake of the tornado that has devastated this community, prominent manufacturers and retailers have pledged to contribute to relief efforts for the residents who lost relatives and property.

Among the retailers, Walmart has pledged $1 million to help with relief efforts and to ensure that basic needs are being met. Target has donated $150,000 in cash and products to assist in the efforts for Joplin and areas impacted by the flooding of the Mississippi River.

Macy's announced a contribution of $100,000 in cash to the American Red Cross' disaster relief fund for victims of the tornados and floods in Missouri, Alabama, Louisville and other states in this region. Kohl's donated $200,000 to the American Red Cross for the same causes.

On the manufacturer side, Leggett & Platt has pledged $1 million toward the relief. In a statement announcing the donation, the company (whose headquarters is in nearby Carthage) said many of its employees sustained "significant personal loss" from the storm. One of its employees was killed in the tornado, Leggett & Platt said.

The tornado struck on May 22, and the death toll has risen to more than 100.
