Target Finally Opening in Manhattan

NEW YORK--It's taken a long time, but Target is finally about to open its first store in Manhattan.

The multi-story location opens its doors on July 25 at the East River Plaza, a big-box center in east Harlem.

Target has had stores in the other boroughs of New York City for years and has also opened temporary pop-up stores from time to time but has been stymied finding the large footprint it needs for one of its units.

In opening in Manhattan, it joins such large national big box chains as Kmart, Costco and Home Depot, which have had stores here for years. Only Walmart remains shut out of Manhattan among the giant general merchandise retailers.

The new Target store will use the retailer's expanded grocery concept, a format it has been adding to hundreds of stores across the country.
