Walmart Holding "Made in the USA" Event
July 8, 2014,
BENTONVILLE, Ark.-Walmart is holding its first-ever open call for "Made in the USA" products here today.
The retailer is opening its doors to more than 500 manufacturers, who will meet with senior Walmart executives and merchants to pitch their products for the stores, Sam's Club warehouse clubs and online. Among the product categories which will be presented today are bed sheets and shower curtains. Today's event is part of Walmart's initiative to increase its spending on domestically made products by $250 billion in the next 10 years.
Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., said this effort is part of the company's commitment to bolstering U.S. manufacturing. "When we buy new products, suppliers hire people to make those products," Simon said. "These American jobs build families and communities, and they help our country thrive."
Walmart said it will accomplish its 10-year agenda through a multipronged approach that will encompass increasing the manufactured goods it already buys from U.S. vendors, sourcing "new to Walmart" U.S. products and supporting the re-shoring of manufacturing of the goods it currently buys from abroad.
