BOSTON-James Savarese has been promoted to chief operating officer of Wayfair, a new position for the online home furnishings retailer.

Savarese is responsible for the company's key operations functions throughout the world. He oversees sales, customer service, the supply chain, merchandise operations and third-party partner programs. He reports directly to Niraj Shah, Wayfair's CEO and co-founder.

Before taking his new role, Savarese was senior vice president of operations, in which (according to a company statement) he transformed Wayfair's customer-care organization and built its vendor direct supply chain. He came to Wayfair in 2008 from Arrowstream, a supply-chain services and software company of which he was a founding member. Before that, he was a consultant in Deloitte's Boston and London offices.
