West Elm to Expand Headquarters and Store in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y.-West Elm has signed a lease for more than 150,000 square feet of office and retail space in this community's historic Empire Stores development, which will lead to an expansion of its headquarters space and store.

The space, which is located at 55 Water Street and which is certified under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, will represent a relocation of both the office and the retail location from their current site in Brooklyn's District Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass (DUMBO) neighborhood. The store, which will be in the building's ground floor, will include West Elm, West Elm Market and West Elm Market Coffee Shop (the latter created in partnership with La Colombe) all in one space.

West Elm, a Williams-Sonoma brand, was founded here more than 10 years ago, said Jim Brett, the brand's president. It now has 51 stores in the United States, Canada and Australia, and recently announced plans to expand into Europe, a location scheduled to open in London this fall. The $150 million conversion of the company's new space here will begin in early 2014.
