New York Home Fashions Market Highlights Outdoor Options

Indoor/outdoor living and U.S.-produced products were two of the themes within the rug category at last month's New York Home Fashions Market, as these are both areas that continue to grow at retail, manufacturers said.
"There's a big push now for American-made," said Steve Snyder, vice president, marketing, Garland, so that's what the company focused on for this market. Its cotton bath rug line, for example, is made in the U.S. "from seed to finish." Other introductions at market include its Nxt Gen line, targeting young couples and college kids, and Lifestyles, Garland's foray into value-priced indoor/outdoor olefin tufted area rugs.
Concord Global Trading also came out with a new indoor/outdoor line, called Positano. Made of frisee yarn, it will include abstract and floral designs. The company also debuted a licensed line with For Giving Souls, which has designs that incorporate inspirational sayings.
For couples who want to coordinate their rugs throughout their home without matchy-matchy designs, Artistic Weavers offered six designs within five color groups, so that the consumer can use the same color throughout the home. Flatweaves also continue their strength--five designs jumped into Surya's top 20 within the past 12 months--and new styles included a reversible line, with such designs as chevrons, ikats and stripes.
Apache debuted its Naturals doormat line, which uses recycled bottles and has the look of coir, and 3-D Impressions, a ribbed look with such styles as ombre stripe, rag rug and chindi. In the kitchen mat category, it is continuing with its ergonomic comfort mats, which included the Velvet Comfort line, which has a microfiber surface and includes patterns based on gardening, flowers, wine and fruit.
Kas Rugs delved into the memory foam category at market, showing an accent rug sample of a design from its handhooked polyester Sonesta collection. It also featured the new Vintage collection of handtufted, overdyed designs, including patchwork and updated traditional looks. Its new Solstice line contains geometric designs handwoven of poly chenille.
Central Oriental debuted Medina, a frisee shag that it is making in the U.S. and with such designs as geometrics, transitional and animal skins. The company also will expand its capability for U.S-made goods, as its ninth loom is on its way to its Maine factory, to be installed by the end of the summer.
Shaw debuted the new Caprice line, a ribbed, textured loop with a printed base that features the ombre space dying technique for color striation. The company also showed its new Melrose accent rugs, which are inspired by the area rug collection launched earlier this year.
