Rosenthal Acquires Arzberg

RosenthalSCHIRNDING, Germany-Rosenthal Sambonet Group has acquired fellow German porcelain maker Arzberg, which has been in insolvency. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Rosenthal will continue to produce and sell porcelain under the Arzberg name. Production at Arzberg's facility in Schirnding, Germany, will be maintained until the end of October and integrated into the Rosenthal Sambonet Group thereafter, Arzberg said. The fate of the Arzberg employees has not yet been determined.

"We are happy to keep this renowned brand in Bavaria and we are sure that from this cooperation the whole group and its employees will benefit," said Pierluigi Coppo, managing director of Rosenthal.

"Given the extremely difficult market environment, the preservation of our valuable brand steeped in tradition is a success," said Volker Bohm, insolvency administrator. "Brand and know-how will remain in the region. For the creditors, the sale is very good news."

Bohm had to give notice to the remaining 120 Arzberg employees at the beginning of August that the business could no longer be maintained in accordance with insolvency regulations. "The company had failed to refresh its product range in a timely manner and never drove the much needed internationalization of the Arzberg brand," Bohm said. "It could therefore only have been saved with major investment. None of the interested parties was ready or willing to make such a commitment. In this respect it is good news that at least the Arzberg brand has now found a new home as part of the Rosenthal Sambonet Group."
