NPD: For Home Decor, Consumers Prefer Mass and Home Improvement Channels
December 15, 2010,
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.--Mass merchants and home improvement stores, known for their wide product assortments, are the channels of choice for consumers making home indoor or outdoor home decor purchases for the holiday season, according to a survey by The NPD Group.
Consumers have either purchased, or plan to purchase, items at the following top five retailers, according to NPD: Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot and Lowe's.
The home-related gifts that the survey respondents purchased or plan to purchase fall into the following categories: storage and organization (8 percent); power tools (6 percent); hand tools (6 percent) and outdoor power equipment (2 percent).
"When it comes to holiday-related items, consumers seem willing to forego advice in favor of selection with the time-starved nature of the holiday season surely playing a role," said Mark Delaney, director of The NPD Group's home division. "Retailers, who can meet their needs quickly and in one stop, will win what is an extremely competitive game this year."
