Consumers love to cook—but hate to clean—so cookware that is dishwasher friendly rates high on their lists.

In particular, more and more hard-anodized cookware is now dishwasher-safe as the technology continues to develop.

Whitford debuted its Xylac dishwasher-safe coating for hard-anodized cookware more than two years ago, “but the word is finally getting out,” said Fran Groesbeck, retail marketing manager, worldwide for Whitford Corporation. The coating is important for hard-anodized cookware because without it, the anodized layer can be removed in the dishwasher, damaging the cookware’s surface, she said. “And you don’t want that to happen, for all [the consumer pays] for hard-anodized cookware,” she added. “The response [to Xylac] has been great—and it has almost become an automatic when working on hard-anodized cookware projects.”

Meyer Corporation U.S. has several dishwasher-safe, hard-anodized cookware lines, including Anolon Authority, which was introduced at the end of last year. “It was important for us to come out with a dishwasher-safe hard-anodized line for Anolon, because we live by the rule of listening to our consumers,” said Jeffrey Kruskall, vice president, business development at Meyer Corporation, U.S. “Our research shows that consumers are looking for dishwasher-safe [cookware], as they are time starved and looking for ease in the kitchen.” The company declined to comment on the type of coating used.

Bialetti SapphireBialetti’s Sapphire line uses a Nanotec-infused nonstick coating to make it dishwasher friendly.
Bialetti introduced its Executive collection earlier this year, which includes a durable Nanotec-infused nonstick coating that is dishwasher-safe. It includes the Sapphire group, made of hard-anodized aluminum and available in 8-, 10- and 12-inch sauté pans as well as a 6-quart Dutch oven, an 11-inch deep sauté pan, a 2-quart sauce pan and a 10-piece set. A stainless tri-ply version is also available.

“As we developed our Sapphire line, we believed it was important to differentiate ourselves to add all the features we could to the product, including a dishwasher-safe exterior, oven-safe design and all stove-top capable to include induction,” said Jason Vaske, Bialetti’s marketing director at Bradshaw. “We then added the slight blue hue to the interior and exterior of the cookware to create a cookware line that was uniquely Bialetti.”

Groupe SEB’s All-Clad brand is launching the All-Clad NS1 nonstick collection this month exclusively at a nationwide specialty retailer. The hard-anodized collection includes 10 SKUs in items with an induction base, and 6 SKUs of specialty cookware, all dishwasher-safe.

Clipper Corp. has incorporated dishwasher-safe construction across all of its brands, as “convenience is important in today’s busy life,” said Jeff Malkasian, executive vice president, licensed brands, Clipper Corp. That includes most of its new “Chopped” licensed cookware, which will hit retail this January.

“Speed is one cornerstone of the Chopped competition and dishwasher-safe products deliver on the premise of speed and usability,” Malkasian said. “Being able to put a pan in the dishwasher makes cleanup easier, giving the home chef more time to focus on creating a great meal.” The line includes aluminum cookware with a hard-anodized look as well as a brushed aluminum.
