The Milieu Debut

A new shelter magazine strives to "appeal to all"

MilieuAfter a lifetime love of designing, interior designer Pamela Pierce has moved to the publishing side, debuting Milieu magazine last month.

Well aware of the number of shuttered shelter magazines over the last few years, Pierce is undeterred, feeling that she and her publication can offer an original viewpoint.

"People want good design magazines," Pierce told HFN. Calling the 146-page inaugural issue, "A World of Change," Pierce believes "people need to grow and evolve," she said. "It's a beautiful world out there."

Though she had no prior publishing experience, mentors such as Lisa Newsom, who founded Veranda, have been instrumental to Pierce's new career. Newsom was also very helpful in Pierce's former career, as she was the first one to publish one of Pierce's interior design projects--Newsom "was always very good to designers." Now Pierce wants to find and publish the work other designers, especially unknown ones, as a way of "giving back," Pierce said. Milieu will also strive to include a range of design styles, she added. "I don't want to be pigeonholed ... I want to appeal to all."

One of the more challenging aspects has been finding diverse homes to feature, she said, and the first issue includes a century-old home in Belgium, a loft in an historic Houston building and a contemporary residence in Beverly Hills. One of the magazine's regular features is called Fashion Meets Furnishings, where the two industries mix, and for the inaugural issue highlighted shoe designer Angela Scott and several pieces of furniture that were reupholstered using her shoe leather, including a chair from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. The next issue will focus on all things white, which Pierce hoped would include the ads as well.

While Milieu is currently quarterly, Pierce hopes eventually it will be published six and then eight times a year. And an online magazine is available to subscribers. It will also be available on the newsstands in several airports, such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Los Angeles International and LaGuardia.

The most surprising thing about this journey for Pierce is "I'm having so much fun. I've met the nicest people." And so far, she's gotten great feedback about this issue. "People are reading the magazine--that makes me happy."

While the magazine had a launch party in Texas last month, where the magazine is based, it will have one at High Point Market as well. To be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, the party will be located in the Verellen showroom on South Hamilton Street.
