Heimtextil to Spotlight Sustainability

FRANKFURT, Germany-The upcoming Heimtextil global textiles trade show will put sustainability front and center with several events and features.

A special section sponsored by the German UNESCO Commission will present textiles and composite materials manufactured in an economical, ecological and socially sustainable way from bark cloth. Located in halls 5.1 and 6.1 of Messe Frankfurt, the section will present these products manufactured by Bark Cloth, a German-African producer that works with organic farmers and seamstresses located in Uganda.

In hall 8, the "Let's talk about it" forum will provide a lecture series that will explore sustainability in depth, featuring speakers that will give an insight into business strategies and quality control. Also, the first edition of a "green directory," listing exhibitors with products manufactured in sustainable ways, will make its appearance at Heimtextil, which takes place Jan. 12-15, 2011.

According to a study commissioned by Messe Frankfurt, the market for sustainable home textiles in North America and Europe measures about $570 million a year. The study projected annual sales growth of about 10 percent for year for sustainable textiles in the bed and bath segments.
