IFDA Survey: Smaller Homes, Multipurpose Furniture Among Future Trends

NEW YORK--Homes will be smaller and furniture will have multiple purposes in the year 2020, according to a report issued by the International Furnishings and Design Association.

Titled "20/20: IFDA's Vision for the Future," the report is the result of a survey of nearly 2,000 IFDA members across the nation and abroad. Among the predictions for 2020 are:

oAmericans will be living in smaller spaces and fewer rooms.


oModular, moveable and smaller-scaled furniture will take the place of built-ins and larger pieces.

oEat-in kitchens will increasingly take the place of dining rooms.


oMaster bedrooms will share space with the home office, media center and exercise room.


oMore home equipment and furnishings will be activated by voice and sensors.

oOutdoor living spaces will expand.


IFDA noted that these statements mirror the results of a similar survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders. According to NAHB, the average size of new homes declined from 2,438 square feet in 2007 to 2,377 square feet last year. Builders told NAHB that they expect the average new-home size to fall further to 2,152 square feet by 2015.
