Sitting Pretty

2013 marks the 80th anniversary of the iconic Stool 60 from Artek, designed by architect Alvar Aalto.

Stool 60 was introduced at the Wood Only exhibition in London in November 1933 and has been recreated by several contemporary designers to celebrate the anniversary. Here, Nao Tamura used screen prints of the cross section of a tree for his stool, suggesting the passage of time.

Made in Brooklyn

In "Brooklyn Makers" (Princeton Architectural Press), photographer Jennifer Causey documents both established and up-and-coming artisans, including bakers, ceramic artists, clothing designers, florists and distillers, revealing what inspires them and keeps them motivated in their craft.

Food for Thought

What we eat from farm to fork is examined in the new exhibition "Our Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture," now at the American Museum of Natural History. Visitors can see rare artifacts from the museum's collection, such as the cake mold shown here, a wooden item used to shape pastries for China's Autumn Moon Festival.

Pantone's Color of the Year: Emerald

"Green is the most abundant hue in nature--the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, which annointed emerald as the color for 2013. A contrast to last year's invigorating tangerine tango, emerald (Pantone 17-5641) is a lush hue that promotes balance and harmony, bringing "a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation."
