NEW YORK-The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has named Alan Steel president and CEO, succeeding Gerald McQueen at the helm of the convention and trade-show location.

Steel was previously president of GLM, owner/operator of trade shows including the New York International Gift Fair, which is held at the Javits Center twice a year.

The board of the convention center has appointed Steel "upon the satisfaction of citizenship and residency requirements," according to a press release from the Javits Center. In the meantime, Steel will serve as a consultant to the center, advising on management and providing strategic development direction to the board and the executive staff. He officially began in this function yesterday. McQueen announced his resignation last October, and agreed to stay on until his successor was appointed.

At GLM, Steel oversaw corporate strategic planning and direction for the company's shows, including the NYIGF, the National Stationery Show, Surtex and others. He was succeeded in this role late last year by Charles McCurdy, CEO of GLM Holdings, the unit of Providence Equity Partners that acquired GLM last September.

Steel had been with GLM since 1982. Prior to that, he worked for the British government for 15 years in a number of trade-related positions at the Department of Trade and Industry in London, the British Consulate in Chicago and the British Trade Development Office here.
