Textiles Sales Up for Holidays, Says NPD

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-Christmas and Hanukkah are the only holidays in which retail sales of home textiles are rising, according to research from The NPD Group.

While not quantifying the size of the increase, Debra Mednick, NPD executive director for the home business, said this holiday season has brought a 36 percent increase in the average selling price for home textiles. "Splurging on products with a more luxurious look and feel can go a long way in getting the home ready for the holidays, or giving just the right gift," Mednick said.

In other findings from the research, 19 percent of all table-linens dollars come from purchases made with the intention of using them for the holidays. Also, 12 percent of all holiday textiles purchases are made with the guest room in mind. Bedding products account for 63 percent of holiday sales of textiles, with sheet sets, beds-in-a-bag and electric blankets ranking at the top in this category.
